1975

RWO Maschinenfabrik is founded at Gutenbergstraße 6, 2803 Weyhe-Dreye. RWO stands for the founders’ family names Riewer, Werle and Otto. 

The Otto family had operated a bell foundry in Bremen Hemelingen since 1873. The roots of the first oily water separators go back to the companies Heinz Gaster Ingenieur GmbH and Otto Schiffsarmaturen und Apparatebau GmbH. 

More than 1000 OWS-GSF (Gravity Separator Filtration) separators were sold. 

1980

RWO participated the first time during the world largest marine trade fair Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine Technology (SMM) in Hamburg.

1985

To support the growth of the company a new facility opens at Am Dammacker 12, Bremen.

1990

By 1990 the third-generation separators, the oily water separator (OWS)
SKIT-aquaclean S is launched and gets first installed on the Hapag-Lloyd vessel MS Berlin Express.

1993

RWO Maschinenfabrik GmbH – Abwassertechnik is taken over by Berkefeld-Filter Anlagenbau GmbH,
headquartered in Celle and becomes part of SIHI-Group.

1996

Relocation of offices and production to Bremen-Huchting, Leerkämpe 3, Bremen.

2000

First installation of a membrane based MEMROD advanced wastewater treatment (AWT) plant on-board the sailing ship Gorch Fock. 

With 6000 sold oily water separators RWO GmbH remains one of the market leaders in the industry. 

2002

Launch of the biological sewage treatment system – WWT, designed and approved according MEPC.2(VI)2.7.

2003

Start for the development on ballast water treatment technology.

2004

Berkefeld is taken over by Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies.
RWO joins Veolia
group. 

Launch of the new OWS SKIT/S-DEB during SMM 2004. 

2005

New bilge water rules MEPC 107(49) get into effect. RWOs SKIT/S-DEB is the front runner in the market.

2007

Inauguration of the RWO facility Thalenhorststraße 15a, Bremen.

2008

The OWS SKIT/S-DEB receives USCG approval. RWO celebrates the OWS #10,000.

2010

The German flag state administration BSH issues the IMO type approval for the CleanBallast water treatment system.

2014

RWO sells the OWS #14,000.  During SMM 2014 the OWS-COM is launched.

2015

With the launch of CS-BIO, RWO sets standards
for compact design in biological sewage
treatment.

2016

New facilities in Gerold-Janssen-Str. 2, Bremen and the new
training and test
facility in Rethem open their doors.

2021

RWO joins the ERMA FIRST Group.
